Difference between opportunity types: referral, job, & introduction

Difference between opportunity types: referral, job, & introduction

In this article you will learn about the 3 different types of opportunities that NuOp has to offer.  You will also learn how to use each one to the best of your ability.

Let's get started by defining each opportunity type:

  1. Referral - when one party has a ready, willing, and able client for another party
  2. Job - when one party hires another party to perform a service
  3. Introduction - when one party introduces two other parties to one another

Here are the main differences:

  1. Job vs Referral - If you have an opportunity where you or your company will hire the person directly then you should create a job in NuOp.  If your opportunity is one in which you know someone else who needs to hire the person then you should create a referral in NuOp.   In other words, a job is an opportunity between two parties.  One party is directly hiring the other party.   A referral is an opportunity between three parties.  One party is trying to connect two other parties to transact business.
  1. Referral  vs Introduction - "ready, willing, & able" vs "not sure".  A referral should really only be used if the person who is seeking the service has real motivation and a relatively short timeline to engage with a service provider.  An introduction usually has one or two parties that is not really sure what they want or when they want it, but you want to connect them anyway.

If you just want to know who your fellow NuOp members would recommend for a specific type of service you can simply create a "general post" with as much or as little detail as you would like.  This post will give other Members the ability to recommend people they know and trust.

There are different ways to initiate the creation of each op type

The most simple way to get into the creation flow for an op is by tapping on the create button in the nav bar.  From that menu you can select anyone of the opportunity types and complete that respective flow.

You can also initiate an opportunity for a specific NuOp member by first going to their profile and tapping the create button.  Keep in mind that you can also create an op for a specific member or contact by starting with the create button in the nav bar.

An introduction is a "lite" version of a referral or a job

When you create a referral or a job, and then go on to complete that respective op, you and the other Member that you exchanged it with will have the ability to track revenue that was generated from the op and you will also have the ability to review one another.  If you create an introduction you will not have the ability to track revenue or post reviews.

Examples of when to create a referral

  1. Someone you know, perhaps a client, asks you to connect them with a service provider you know for a service they need.  In other words, they want you to have the service provider reach out to them.
  2. You have specific information that could benefit two parties, and you would like to be paid for making the connection.  In this case you would create a referral in NuOp and require a referral fee.

Examples of when to create a job

  1. You have a need for someone to perform a service for you.  Let's say you need a roofer to put a new roof on your house.  You could select the "one time" job sub-type to accomplish this.
  2. You have a need for a graphic designer to create a logo for your business, and maybe some other marketing pieces including flyers and a website.  You could select the "short term" job sub-type to accomplish this.
  3. You have a need for someone to join your company as an employee.  You could select the "full-time" or "part-time" employee job sub-type to accomplish this.

Examples of when to create an introduction

  1. You were speaking with Jane and it sparked an idea, "I should introduce Jane to Sarah.  They could potentially do a lot of business together".  You could create an introduction for these two parties and provide them with each other's contact information so that they can communicate.
  2. Your friend Tammy sent you an sms message, "I know that you just renovated your kitchen.  We are thinking about renovating ours.  Who would you recommend?"  Bob did a great job on your kitchen so you want to recommend him to Tammy.  You could create an introduction for Tammy and Bob, but in this case you only want to reveal the contact information to Tammy because you are not sure that she would want Bob to contact her.
